Ten years after its original release, Abyss remains Chelsea Wolfe’s defining statement. Originally released in 2015, the album blurred the boundaries between doom metal, gothic rock, industrial textures and dark folk, creating a sound that was as emotionally devastating as it was sonically overwhelming. The 10th Anniversary Edition on Blue/Black/Silver “Insomnia” Vinyl celebrates an album that has only grown in stature over the past decade.
As a review, Abyss is a masterclass in atmosphere. Wolfe transforms personal fears, particularly her experiences with sleep paralysis, into music that feels genuinely unsettling without relying on horror clichés. Every song is wrapped in towering walls of guitars, haunting electronics and cavernous production, yet beneath the darkness lies an extraordinary sense of melody.
The album opens with “Carrion Flowers,” immediately setting an oppressive tone through crushing industrial rhythms and Wolfe’s ghostly vocal performance. From there, Abyss never loses its grip. “Iron Moon” is one of the heaviest songs of Wolfe’s career, while “Dragged Out” and “Grey Days” demonstrate her remarkable ability to balance beauty with sheer sonic weight.
Perhaps the album’s greatest achievement is its emotional honesty. Wolfe never hides behind the production. Her vocals remain intimate even as the music becomes enormous around her, making songs like “After The Fall” and “Simple Death” feel deeply personal. It is this vulnerability that separates Abyss from countless other dark records.

The production by John Congleton deserves enormous credit. Every layer serves the songs, creating a dense, immersive soundscape without ever becoming cluttered. The guitars hit with crushing force, the electronic elements add tension rather than gimmickry, and Wolfe’s voice sits perfectly at the centre of it all.
Ten years on, Abyss has lost none of its impact. If anything, it feels even more influential today, having inspired a generation of artists working across doom, post-metal, darkwave and experimental rock. The anniversary edition gives listeners another opportunity to experience one of the finest heavy albums of the 2010s in a beautiful collector’s format.
