Released in 1999 between Cruelty and the Beast and Midian, From the Cradle to Enslave captures Cradle of Filth during one of the most important periods of their career. Rather than a conventional studio album, this six-track EP combines new material, covers, a remix and a re-recording, making it an essential companion to the band’s classic late-’90s catalogue.

The title track remains one of Cradle of Filth’s definitive songs. “From the Cradle to Enslave” has everything that made this era of the band so effective: Dani Filth’s extreme vocals, savage guitar work, gothic keyboards, dramatic arrangements and the theatrical atmosphere that separated Cradle from virtually every other extreme metal band of the period.

“Of Dark Blood and Fucking” pushes things further into vicious blackened metal territory before the band tears through The Misfits’ “Death Comes Ripping.” Cradle’s interpretation of Anathema’s “Sleepless” is another standout, taking the melancholy of the original and filtering it through the band’s unmistakably gothic sound.

The EP also includes the “Pervert’s Church (From the Cradle to Deprave)” remix and closes with the “Be Quick or Be Dead” version of “Funeral in Carpathia,” revisiting one of the great songs from Dusk and Her Embrace. It’s a strange combination on paper, but that’s part of the appeal. From the Cradle to Enslave feels like a snapshot of Cradle of Filth at their most excessive, provocative and creatively restless.

For collectors of classic Cradle of Filth, this is an important release. The original Music for Nations CD editions have become particularly desirable, representing the band during the transition between two of their most celebrated studio albums.
