Forty years on, Somewhere In Time still sounds like Iron Maiden stepping into another dimension. Released in 1986 as the band’s sixth studio album, it followed the monumental Powerslave era but refused to simply repeat the formula. Instead, Maiden introduced guitar synthesisers and a more futuristic production, creating an album that was unmistakably theirs while opening an entirely new chapter in their sound.

The change is obvious from the opening moments. Adrian Smith was particularly inspired during these sessions, contributing some of the album’s strongest writing, while Steve Harris continued pushing Maiden towards longer and increasingly ambitious compositions. Smith’s melodic guitar work with Dave Murray is exceptional throughout, and the combination of those futuristic textures with Nicko McBrain and Harris’s unmistakable rhythm section gives the record a character unlike anything else in the Maiden catalogue.

Bruce Dickinson is equally commanding, despite famously receiving no songwriting credits on the album. His voice cuts through the dense production beautifully, moving between the urgency of the heavier material and the more atmospheric passages without losing any of its power. It’s also an album where Maiden’s twin-guitar harmonies seem perfectly suited to the science-fiction aesthetic surrounding the music.

Then there’s Derek Riggs’ extraordinary cover artwork. Cybernetic Eddie wandering through a futuristic city remains one of the most celebrated Iron Maiden sleeves ever created, packed with references, jokes and Easter eggs that fans have spent decades examining. Few album covers so perfectly represent the music contained inside them.

Its reputation has only strengthened with time. Iron Maiden themselves have recently returned several Somewhere In Timesongs to their live repertoire, including material that spent decades absent from the stage. The band’s official announcement describes the album as a record that helped take Maiden to new heights around the world and laid the groundwork for their continued rise.

To celebrate its 40th anniversary, Somewhere In Time returns on 4 December 2026 as a limited edition Oxblood colour vinyl LP. This new pressing uses the 2015 remastered audio and is presented as a single 140g coloured 12-inch LP.
