There are box sets, and then there are monuments. Iron Maiden’s 50th Anniversary Studio Album Collection, Part One: 1980–1992 gathers the band’s extraordinary first nine studio albums into a 10LP coloured-vinyl collection, covering the period in which Maiden went from East London hopefuls to one of the biggest heavy metal bands on the planet. The collection forms part of the band’s ongoing 50th-anniversary celebrations and ties directly into the classic era revisited on the Run For Your Lives tour.

As a run of albums, it’s almost absurdly strong. The self-titled Iron Maiden and Killers capture the raw Paul Di’Anno years before Bruce Dickinson’s arrival transformed the band’s possibilities on The Number Of The Beast. From there came Piece Of Mind and Powerslave, with the latter cementing the classic Dickinson/Harris/Murray/Smith/McBrain line-up as a genuine global force.

Then Maiden changed the rules again. Somewhere In Time introduced guitar synthesisers and a futuristic sheen, while Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son pushed the band into full-blown progressive concept-album territory. No Prayer For The Dying deliberately stripped things back before Fear Of The Dark closed this first chapter in 1992, shortly before Dickinson’s temporary departure.

What makes this collection particularly attractive is that it isn’t simply nine black records dropped into a box. Every album receives its own colour treatment, with the self-titled debut on red/gold, Killers on red, The Number Of The Beast on silver, Piece Of Mind on yellow, Powerslave on gold, Somewhere In Time on oxblood, Seventh Son on white and No Prayer on olive. Fear Of The Dark expands to two records, with one blue and the other yellow.

The albums use the 2015 remastered audio, and the records are housed together in a newly designed collector’s box. An anniversary poster is also included. Outside the USA, the collection has been announced as an Amazon exclusive, making this one of the centrepiece physical releases of Maiden’s 50th-anniversary campaign.

For a Maiden collector, the appeal is obvious. It’s essentially the story of the band’s classic first twelve years told through nine studio albums, ten slabs of coloured vinyl and some of the most recognisable heavy-metal artwork ever created. As Part One rather tantalisingly suggests, this may only be the beginning.
