With Foundations of Burden, Pallbearer took everything that made their debut Sorrow and Extinction remarkable and made it bigger, heavier and considerably more ambitious. Released in 2014, the Arkansas band’s second album helped establish Pallbearer as one of the most important doom metal bands of their generation.

This is doom built on scale rather than sheer ugliness. Massive guitar passages unfold patiently, frequently giving way to beautifully melancholic melodies and progressive arrangements. Brett Campbell’s mournful vocals float above guitars that can move from crushing heaviness to almost psychedelic warmth, while Joseph D. Rowland, Devin Holt and Mark Lierly give the lengthy compositions enough movement that they rarely feel static.

The album’s six songs are allowed plenty of room to develop. Pallbearer weren’t interested in reducing doom to a collection of slow riffs; these are carefully constructed pieces filled with shifting dynamics, harmonised guitars and enormous emotional peaks. There’s an obvious debt to traditional doom and bands such as Black Sabbath, but Foundations of Burden already sounds distinctly like Pallbearer rather than an exercise in revivalism.

A major part of that impact comes from producer Billy Anderson, whose résumé includes work with Sleep, Neurosis and Melvins. Recorded at Type Foundry Studios in Portland during February and March 2014, the album possesses considerable weight without burying the melodic details beneath the distortion.

The result was an album that pushed Pallbearer well beyond underground curiosity status. Foundations of Burdenreceived widespread acclaim on release and remains a defining record of the 2010s doom revival—a sprawling, melancholy and frequently beautiful album that rewards being played very, very loud.

This is the original Profound Lore CD edition, presented in a four-panel Digipak with booklet. Pallbearer’s own Bandcamp confirms that packaging, while contemporary Profound Lore information confirms the worldwide CD release on 19 August 2014.
