Few soundtracks are as inseparable from their film as Natural Born Killers. Oliver Stone’s 1994 assault on celebrity, violence and American media culture needed something considerably stranger than a conventional collection of songs, and Trent Reznor delivered exactly that.
Rather than simply placing tracks from the movie one after another, Reznor constructed the soundtrack as a collage. Songs collide with dialogue, sound effects and fragments of other recordings, producing an album that feels almost as fractured and hallucinatory as Stone’s film. It’s one of those rare soundtracks that works as its own piece of art rather than merely functioning as a souvenir of the movie.
The cast of musicians is ridiculous. Nine Inch Nails, Leonard Cohen, L7, Patti Smith, Bob Dylan, Cowboy Junkies, Jane’s Addiction, Dr. Dre, Lard, Patsy Cline, Peter Gabriel and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan all occupy the same record, yet somehow the chaos holds together.
Reznor’s contribution is particularly important. “Burn” was created specifically for the project, while the soundtrack also uses a reworked version of Nine Inch Nails’ Something I Can Never Have and A Warm Place. Against those industrial textures, Leonard Cohen provides a wonderfully ominous bookend, while the shifts into punk, hip-hop, country and world music reinforce the feeling that you’re listening to a warped transmission from the film itself.
The At The Movies / Music On Vinyl edition gives the sprawling soundtrack the treatment it deserves: two 180-gram audiophile LPs housed in a gatefold sleeve. This is the regular black vinyl edition; there have also been limited coloured editions, including the original numbered blood-red pressing and a later green-vinyl version, so those shouldn’t be confused with this pressing.
More than thirty years later, Natural Born Killers remains one of the great alternative soundtracks of the ’90s. It’s ugly, eclectic, provocative and frequently brilliant—a snapshot of the decade assembled by Trent Reznor at precisely the moment Nine Inch Nails were becoming one of the most important acts in alternative music.
