Few jazz albums have artwork quite as extraordinary as Freddie McCoy’s Spider Man. Originally released by Prestige Records in 1966, this wonderfully unusual record combines sophisticated soul jazz with one of Marvel’s most recognisable superheroes. Sixty years later, it returns in a spectacular all-analog pressing that should appeal equally to jazz collectors, comic-book enthusiasts and lovers of obscure vinyl.

Behind that extraordinary sleeve lies an excellent jazz quartet led by McCoy’s wonderfully fluid vibraphone playing. Accompanied by pianist Charlie Wilson, bassist Steve Davis and drummer Rudy Lawless, McCoy delivers six tracks of effortlessly cool, groove-driven jazz. From the infectious swing of “Hav’ Mercy” to the atmospheric title track and the beautifully restrained interpretation of “The Girl from Ipanema”, the album has considerably more to offer than its comic-book novelty might suggest.

The record’s history is nearly as fascinating as its music. The original sleeve announced Spider Man as the beginning of a proposed series combining Marvel characters with contemporary music, although the series apparently never materialised. Early pressings even retained the working title Hav’ Mercy on their labels, adding another curious detail to an already highly collectible release.

Real Gone Music’s forthcoming 60th Anniversary Edition marks the album’s first-ever vinyl reissue. Presented in a striking clear pressing with red and blue Spidey swirls, this all-analog edition brings a genuine 1960s curiosity back into circulation in suitably eye-catching fashion.
