Few performances in the MTV Unplugged series carry the emotional weight of Alice In Chains’ appearance. Recorded at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Majestic Theatre on 10 April 1996, the concert brought the band back to the stage after a lengthy absence and placed Layne Staley’s extraordinary voice at the centre of a stark acoustic performance. The set reaches throughout the band’s catalogue, including “Got Me Wrong,” “Heaven Beside You,” “Would?” and the haunting “Frogs.” It also includes “The Killer Is Me,” a previously unreleased song written by Cantrell that gave fans something genuinely new alongside the radically rearranged favourites.

This performance also marked one of Alice In Chains’ final major appearances with Layne Staley. That history inevitably gives MTV Unplugged an additional emotional dimension, but the album’s reputation isn’t based purely on tragedy or nostalgia. These are exceptional performances from a remarkable band, captured in a format that exposed just how good the songs really were.

The 30th Anniversary Edition celebrates the album on Yellow Vinyl across two LPs, making this a striking new pressing of one of the essential live albums of the 1990s.
