By 2003, Avenged Sevenfold had already shown promise with Sounding the Seventh Trumpet, but it was Waking The Fallen that announced them as one of metal’s most exciting young bands. Brutal yet melodic, technical yet memorable, the album became a blueprint for the next generation of metalcore. More than a decade later, Waking The Fallen: Resurrected celebrates that landmark release with a comprehensive collection of demos, rare recordings and a documentary that offers an intimate look at the band’s formative years.
Listening today, it’s remarkable how confident Waking The Fallen sounds. The twin-guitar attack of Synyster Gates and Zacky Vengeance is already firing on all cylinders, while The Rev’s extraordinary drumming constantly pushes the songs beyond the boundaries of traditional metalcore. At the centre of it all is M. Shadows, whose blend of harsh vocals and soaring melodies helped define the band’s unmistakable sound.
The album is packed with fan favourites. “Unholy Confessions” remains one of the defining metal songs of the 2000s, its instantly recognisable opening riff inspiring countless bands that followed. “Second Heartbeat,” “Chapter Four,” “Remenissions,” and “Eternal Rest” showcase a band already combining technical musicianship with huge choruses and memorable songwriting.
Rather than simply remastering the original album, Resurrected expands the experience. The collection includes newly remastered audio, previously unreleased demos, alternate versions, live recordings, and the excellent documentary Waking The Fallen: Resurrected, which chronicles the making of the album through archival footage and interviews with the band. It transforms the release into a genuine historical document rather than another anniversary cash-in.
The remaster itself is excellent. Producer Andrew Murdock preserves the aggression and rawness of the original recording while adding greater clarity and punch. The guitars sound enormous, The Rev’s drumming has even more impact, and the layered vocal arrangements shine throughout.
Looking back, Waking The Fallen wasn’t just an important album for Avenged Sevenfold. It helped reshape modern heavy music. The songs remain powerful, the musicianship still feels astonishing, and the expanded Resurrected edition provides the definitive way to experience one of the most influential metal albums of its generation.
