WNEW FM BROADCAST – THE PALLADIUM, NEW YORK, USA JUNE 29TH 1982
This is Maiden in their absolute hungry phase. The Number Of The Beast tour was still fresh enough to feel dangerous, and Bruce was still out to prove he was more than the new kid replacing Di’Anno. The Palladium show captures everything that made that era untouchable. The band is sharp, mean, alive. Clive Burr drives the whole thing like a man who knows exactly how much time he has left with the band. Adrian and Dave sound like they’re plugged straight into the goddamn mains. And Bruce, still lean and feral, screams like he’s trying to crack the ceiling of the venue clean open.
The WNEW-FM source gives it that classic early-80s broadcast warmth. A little raw, a little compressed, but perfect. The crowd is loud, the band is louder, and you can practically smell the sweat, denim and cigarette haze drifting through the air. This show is one of those nights where you can feel a band crossing into legend.
