KISS: Rock And Roll Over (US First Pressing)

$280.00

KISS’s Rock And Roll Over is the band’s fifth studio album, released in the US on 11 November 1976 by Casablanca Records. It was recorded at the Star Theatre in Nanuet, New York with Eddie Kramer producing, and it hit No. 11 on the Billboard 200.

If Destroyer was the big, theatrical leap, Rock And Roll Over was KISS tightening the screws and getting dirt back under their fingernails. This is a tougher, more direct record. The production still has punch, but the album feels leaner and more hard-rock driven, with less of the grand studio gloss that defined Destroyer. That shift works in its favor. Songs like “I Want You,” “Calling Dr. Love,” “Ladies Room,” and “Makin’ Love” have a swagger that feels immediate, hungry, and built for maximum volume. Modern reviews have often treated it as one of the band’s most consistent 70s albums, with AllMusic in particular praising its return to a rawer attack.

This album also matters because of where it lands in the classic KISS timeline. It still has the makeup-era mystique and larger-than-life attitude, but musically it is a stripped-back reminder that the band could deliver straight hard rock when they wanted to. “Hard Luck Woman” became another major single for Peter Criss, while “Calling Dr. Love” turned into one of Gene Simmons’ signature songs and a long-running live staple.

For collectors, the US first pressing carries the original Casablanca catalogue number NBLP 7037. Discogs identifies original US November 1976 pressings under that number, including a Santa Maria Press variant. The original release was housed in a gatefold sleeve, and contemporary release notes say it included a cover-art sticker and a glossy photo press-release pamphlet inside.

What really keeps Rock And Roll Over essential is that it feels effortless. There is no filler concept, no studio overreach, no need to prove anything. It is just KISS doing what they did best in 1976: loud hooks, sleazy charm, big choruses, and enough grit to stop it turning soft. For plenty of fans, this is the purest studio snapshot of the original lineup in full flight.
