The early 1990s represented one of the most fascinating transitions in KISS history. The glossy production and pop-metal sheen that had characterised much of the band’s previous decade were rapidly becoming obsolete, and KISS responded by getting considerably heavier. The Alternative Revenge – The Studio Takes 1990–1992 digs directly into that transformation, collecting 21 demos, alternate recordings, instrumentals and unreleased studio material from the period surrounding Revenge.
What makes this collection particularly interesting is hearing familiar Revenge material before everything was locked into its finished form. Early takes of material including “Domino”, “Paralyzed” and “Tough Love” sit alongside instrumental and scat-vocal versions of songs such as “Heart of Chrome” and “Take It Off”. Rather than simply presenting another selection of KISS hits, the record offers a look inside the band’s creative process during one of its strongest non-makeup periods.
There’s also plenty here for serious KISS collectors. The second half ventures beyond familiar album material into songs and ideas including “Everybody Wants”, “Everybody Knows”, “You’re My Reason For Living”, “I Am Yours” and “Rain Keeps Fallin'”. These recordings give the collection the character of a studio archive rather than a conventional compilation, documenting ideas being developed, discarded and reshaped.
Historically, the timing is significant. The Revenge era saw Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Bruce Kulick and Eric Singer embracing a tougher and more contemporary hard-rock sound, leaving much of the flamboyant late-’80s aesthetic behind. Producer Bob Ezrin’s return for Revenge would ultimately help give the finished album its enormous sound, but these studio recordings provide another perspective on the material before and around that transformation.
For hardcore members of the KISS Army, that’s really the attraction here. The Alternative Revenge isn’t intended as an introduction to KISS; it’s an archaeological dig into an unusually creative period of the band’s career. Hearing unfinished arrangements, instrumental takes and alternate performances provides a fascinating companion to Revenge and a snapshot of KISS adapting to a rapidly changing rock landscape.
This 2026 Vinyl Slab edition spreads the complete 21-track collection across two vinyl LPs and is scheduled for release on 16 October 2026.
