With Korn III: Remember Who You Are, Korn deliberately stripped things back. Released in 2010, the album reunited the band with producer Ross Robinson, the man behind their landmark self-titled debut and Life Is Peachy. The intention was clear: move away from excessive studio polish and rediscover some of the uncomfortable, aggressive energy that made early Korn so powerful.
That approach is immediately apparent on “Oildale (Leave Me Alone).” Jonathan Davis sounds raw and confrontational, while James “Munky” Shaffer’s guitar work returns to the dissonant textures and enormous low-end riffs associated with the band’s formative years. Reginald “Fieldy” Arvizu’s bass once again plays a major role in the sound, providing that unmistakable percussive attack underneath the guitars.
“Pop a Pill” is one of the album’s strongest cuts, built around a monstrous groove and an increasingly intense Davis performance. “Fear Is a Place to Live,” “Move On” and “The Past” continue the darker mood, while “Let the Guilt Go” became another major track from the record.
Ross Robinson’s presence is important. Rather than simply recreating the sound of 1994, he pushed the band towards more spontaneous performances and encouraged Davis to dig into uncomfortable emotional territory. The result feels considerably less controlled than albums such as Untitled and See You on the Other Side.
The album also marked an important lineup change. Ray Luzier appears on his first Korn studio album as the band’s permanent drummer, bringing enormous technical ability while maintaining the loose groove required by the material.
This Special Edition CD + DVD expands the album with bonus material and a DVD documenting Korn during this period. For collectors, it’s a much more substantial edition than the standard CD and an excellent document of the band’s attempt to reconnect with the raw spirit of their earliest records.
Korn III isn’t a carbon copy of the debut, and it doesn’t need to be. It’s a deliberately abrasive Korn record made by musicians trying to remove some of the comfort that comes with years of success. The result remains one of the more interesting entries in their later catalogue.
