If Welcome to Sky Valley perfected the Kyuss sound, Blues for the Red Sun was the record that established the blueprint. Originally released in 1992, the band’s second album remains one of the foundational documents of desert and stoner rock: brutally heavy without being conventional metal, psychedelic without losing its aggression, and drenched in the strange atmosphere of California’s Palm Desert.

The centre of the record is that extraordinary guitar sound. Josh Homme tuned down, pushed his guitar through bass amplification and created something thick enough to feel almost physical. Against it, Brant Bjork’s drumming swings rather than simply pounds, Nick Oliveri’s bass adds another layer of low-end violence and John Garcia delivers the vocals with the ragged force that became synonymous with Kyuss. Rhino itself describes Homme’s distinctive approach as a key part of the record’s enormous influence.

Producer Chris Goss deserves considerable credit as well. Rather than cleaning Kyuss up, the production captures the sense of a band playing at punishing volume while retaining the psychedelic spaces between the riffs. The quieter passages aren’t interruptions—they make the inevitable return of the amplifiers hit considerably harder.

Commercial success wasn’t really the story here. Influence was. Blues for the Red Sun became one of those albums passed between musicians and heavy-music obsessives until its reputation dwarfed its original sales. Stoner rock, desert rock, psychedelic doom and countless fuzz-heavy bands that followed owe something to what Kyuss were doing here.

It also marks the end of an important version of the band. This was Nick Oliveri’s final Kyuss studio album, with Scott Reeder subsequently taking over on bass. That gives Blues for the Red Sun a distinctive place between the rougher early Kyuss and the increasingly expansive records that followed.

This collectible Rocktober edition returns the album on 140-gram Gold Vinyl through Elektra/Rhino. Rhino confirms the gold-vinyl pressing, while the original US Rocktober release was issued for the album’s 30th anniversary in October 2022. The same UPC also appeared in the 2023 Rocktober campaign in international markets, so you’ll see retailers describe it as either Rocktober 2022 or Rocktober 2023 depending on territory.
