letlive.: Fake History (Digipak CD)

Fake History is the album that put letlive. firmly on the map. Originally released in 2010 before receiving a wider reissue through Epitaph Records in 2011, the record introduced a much larger audience to the Los Angeles band’s volatile combination of post-hardcore, punk, soul, alternative rock and outright chaos.

At the centre of everything is Jason Aalon Butler, whose performance is astonishingly intense. He can move from a soulful clean vocal to a desperate scream almost instantly, giving the record an emotional volatility that separates letlive. from many of their post-hardcore contemporaries. Behind him, the band constantly shifts between jagged hardcore riffs, atmospheric passages and unexpectedly melodic hooks.

Opening track “Le Prologue” serves as a brief introduction before “The Sick, Sick, 6.8 Billion” erupts into action. It’s an immediate demonstration of what makes the album work: frantic rhythms, huge dynamic shifts and Butler sounding as though every line might be his last.

“Renegade 86′” became one of the band’s defining songs, combining aggression with a genuinely memorable chorus, while “Muther” remains one of the emotional centrepieces of the album. Featuring guest vocals from Chelsea Warlick, the track demonstrates that letlive. could be every bit as effective when they pulled back the intensity.

Elsewhere, “Homeless Jazz,” “Casino Columbus,” “H. Ledger” and “We, the Pros of Con” continually twist conventional post-hardcore structures into unexpected shapes. There are elements of Glassjaw, Refused and At the Drive-In in the band’s DNA, but Fake History never feels like imitation. letlive. had already developed an identity entirely their own.

The album’s greatest strength is that its chaos always serves the songs. Beneath Butler’s explosive performances and the band’s unpredictable arrangements are strong melodies and genuinely thoughtful songwriting. It’s aggressive without becoming one-dimensional and experimental without losing its immediacy.

Fake History remains the essential starting point for letlive. and one of the standout post-hardcore releases of its era. Intense, intelligent and emotionally exhausting in the best possible way, it’s a record that still sounds dangerously alive.
