There are collaborations that look intriguing on paper, and then there are pairings that seem almost inevitable once you hear the idea. The Pulse Of Atoms brings together dark-ambient pioneer Lustmord and legendary Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo, creating something far removed from conventional metal but every bit as heavy. This is their first full-length collaboration, built from subterranean electronics, industrial textures, enormous low frequencies and Lombardo’s instinctive, physical approach to percussion.
Rather than simply laying drums over dark ambient soundscapes, Lombardo becomes part of the environment itself. His drums, percussion, synthetic sounds and editing collide with Lustmord’s cavernous sonic architecture, producing music that feels geological and cosmic rather than song-based. Lustmord himself describes the concept in terms of planetary death, stellar birth and the beginning and end of the universe — a suitably gigantic canvas for an album that deliberately avoids fitting comfortably into any single genre.

Across seven lengthy pieces, The Pulse Of Atoms moves between oppressive industrial rhythm, vast dark-ambient spaces and passages where Lombardo’s percussion becomes almost ritualistic. Anyone expecting Slayer-style speed will be looking in the wrong direction; the connection is intensity rather than genre. The album is patient, ominous and genuinely immersive, with the drums providing a human pulse inside Lustmord’s enormous, alien sound world.
This Crystal Clear Vinyl edition spreads the album across two LPs and is issued through Ipecac Recordings.
