Released in 1986, Orgasmatron marked the beginning of a formidable new chapter for Motörhead. With Phil Campbell and Würzel on guitars, Pete Gill behind the drums and Lemmy leading the charge, the band delivered one of the heaviest and most uncompromising records of their career. Darker, more metallic and considerably more menacing than its predecessors, Orgasmatron was Motörhead at their most confrontational.
The album’s notoriously murky original production has divided fans for decades, but there’s no disputing the quality of the material. The relentless attack of “Deaf Forever”, the breakneck aggression of “Mean Machine” and the grinding, apocalyptic title track demonstrate a band successfully reinventing itself without abandoning its rock ‘n’ roll foundations. It’s an album whose reputation has only grown with time, influencing generations of thrash, speed and extreme metal musicians.
For its 40th anniversary, Motörhead have assembled a substantial deluxe edition that finally gives this remarkable album the treatment it deserves. The original recording has been remastered and cut at half speed from the original tapes, while longtime Motörhead collaborator Cameron Webb has created an entirely new remix and remaster from the original multitrack recordings. The inclusion of both versions provides a fascinating opportunity to hear one of the band’s most controversial productions in an entirely different light.
A third LP digs deeper into the album’s history, featuring previously unreleased studio rehearsals and outtakes from 1985, alongside the complete 1986 BBC Radio 1 Friday Rock Show session. Everything is presented in a deluxe 24-page bookpack featuring an extensive account of the album’s creation by Neil Perry, complemented by rare photographs and memorabilia.
