There was only ever one Paul Di’Anno. His time with Iron Maiden may have lasted for just two studio albums, but the combination of punk aggression, street-level attitude and that unmistakably rough voice helped give early Maiden an identity completely different from the band that followed. Di’Anno – Iron Maiden’s Lost Singer captures that voice much later in life, during a comeback that by all reasonable expectations probably shouldn’t have happened.
Recorded during Di’Anno’s 2022 comeback tour, this is inevitably a very different Paul from the young man who tore through Iron Maiden and Killers four decades earlier. His health problems were severe, his mobility was badly compromised and he frequently performed from a wheelchair. That context makes these recordings considerably more than another collection of Maiden-related live material. This is Di’Anno getting himself back onto a stage and doing what had defined much of his life. Cleopatra describes the tour itself as an “improbable comeback,” and that’s a pretty accurate summation.
The set naturally leans heavily into his Maiden legacy. But there is also material from Di’Anno’s post-Maiden career, making this a broader look at the singer than the title might initially suggest. His voice is weathered and battle-scarred here, but that arguably suits the material. Nobody is going to mistake these performances for 1980-era Paul Di’Anno—and that’s precisely why the album has some genuine emotional weight.
The real collector’s bonus is the accompanying 7-inch single. Its A-side features “The Beast Is Back (2026 Mix),” an unreleased studio recording written by Di’Anno with Cliff Evans of Tank and featuring legendary drummer Vinny Appice. The reverse returns to classic Maiden territory with two more live performances. Cleopatra specifically identifies the unreleased studio track as one of the features unique to the vinyl edition.
Released in conjunction with Wes Orshoski’s documentary of the same name, the album now carries an added poignancy following Di’Anno’s death in October 2024. It isn’t intended to recreate the young singer heard on those first two Maiden albums. Instead, it documents the battered, stubborn and unmistakably individual performer who somehow managed to fight his way back onto a stage more than forty years later.
For anyone with a particular affection for the Di’Anno years of Iron Maiden, this is far more interesting than another generic live compilation. It’s a document of the final chapter of his performing career—and the Red/Black/Splatter LP and exclusive bonus 7″ make the Cleopatra edition a particularly attractive physical release.
