Let England Shake is one of the defining records of PJ Harvey’s career, but it achieves its power by doing almost the opposite of what might be expected from a great rock album. Released in 2011, Harvey’s eighth studio record turns away from the intensely personal perspective of much of her earlier work and instead examines England, war, national identity and the terrible human cost buried beneath romantic ideas of patriotism.
Much of the album draws inspiration from the First World War, particularly the Gallipoli campaign, but Harvey avoids making a conventional historical concept album. Images of soldiers, ruined landscapes and death are woven through strangely beautiful arrangements where autoharp, guitars, brass and percussion frequently sound delicate rather than oppressive. That contrast makes the darker moments hit considerably harder.
Harvey’s voice is also markedly different here. She frequently sings in a higher, almost ghostly register, giving the impression that these stories are being recalled from somewhere far removed from the events themselves. Long-time collaborators John Parish and Mick Harvey are central to the album’s distinctive sound, while producer Flood once again helps create a recording where atmosphere matters as much as instrumentation.
What makes Let England Shake exceptional is that its political concerns never overwhelm the music. Harvey isn’t delivering slogans; she’s examining mythology, memory and the uncomfortable relationship between national pride and violence. It’s thoughtful without becoming academic and haunting without relying on obvious theatricality.
The response was extraordinary. Let England Shake won the 2011 Mercury Prize, making PJ Harvey the first artist to win the award twice, ten years after Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea. It also received the Ivor Novello Award for Album of the Year, further cementing its reputation as one of the most acclaimed British albums of its era.
