Wardruna – Runaljod – Yggdrasil (2013) is the second chapter in Wardruna’s Runaljod trilogy—ritualistic Nordic folk built around the Elder Futhark runes, using a mix of Old Norse / Norwegian language and historically-inspired textures (frame drums, tagelharpa, lur, bone/wood/percussive detail) to create something that feels ceremonial rather than “songs for radio.”
This record is all about pulse + space: slow-blooming drones, trance percussion, and vocals that sound like invocation. It’s immersive and physical—music you can feel in the room—equal parts ancient and cinematic. The sequencing is strong too: it opens in fog and fire (“Rotlaust Tre Fell”), builds through rune-themes like “Fehu” (wealth/force) and “NaudiR” (need/constraint), and ends with the iconic funeral-road closer “Helvegen.
