Rose Tattoo’s second album, Assault & Battery, is a ferocious slice of Australian pub rock, delivered with the sort of swagger, aggression and sheer volume that made the band legendary. Originally released in 1981, the album finds Angry Anderson and company refining the raw, blues-driven sound of their debut into ten tracks of uncompromising hard rock.

Produced by Harry Vanda and George Young, Assault & Battery is powered by Peter Wells’ unmistakable slide guitar, Mick Cocks’ razor-sharp riffs and a rhythm section that hits like a runaway freight train. From the opening blast of “Out of This Place” to the bruising title track and the magnificent “Rock ‘N’ Roll Is King”, this is Rose Tattoo at their most explosive. There is nothing polished or restrained about it; every song sounds like it was built to be played at maximum volume in a packed, beer-soaked Australian pub.

This 2021 purple vinyl reissue has been newly remastered from the original tapes, bringing one of Australia’s great hard rock albums back to the turntable in a suitably striking edition.
