Candlemass: From the 13th Sun (Expanded 2LP)

$80.99

By the time Candlemass released From the 13th Sun in 1999, they had already cemented their place as one of doom metal’s most influential bands. Instead of revisiting the majestic, operatic sound that defined classics like Epicus Doomicus Metallicus and Nightfall, bassist and chief songwriter Leif Edling steered the band into far darker and more experimental territory. The result is one of the most distinctive—and criminally overlooked—albums in the Candlemass catalogue.

Rather than relying on towering epics and theatrical grandeur, From the 13th Sun embraces a dense, hypnotic atmosphere. Thick, fuzz-laden guitars, psychedelic textures and crushing grooves replace many of the band’s traditional hallmarks, creating a record that feels oppressive, mysterious and utterly unique. While its direction surprised fans upon release, time has been kind to the album, with many now recognising it as one of Candlemass’ boldest artistic statements.

Opening with the relentless “Droid”, the album immediately establishes its darker identity. Songs like “Tot” and “Elephant Star” are driven by monolithic riffs that feel as much indebted to stoner rock and psychedelic metal as classic doom. The music moves at its own pace, favouring atmosphere over speed, with every riff hanging heavily in the air.

New vocalist Björn Flodkvist brought a markedly different style to the band. Rather than attempting to emulate Messiah Marcolin’s unmistakable operatic delivery, Flodkvist opts for a rawer, grittier vocal performance that perfectly complements the album’s darker, earthier sound. His understated approach gives From the 13th Sun its own personality and helps separate it from every other Candlemass release.

Leif Edling’s songwriting remains the album’s greatest strength. Tracks like “Galatea”, “Cyclo-F” and “Mythos”showcase his ability to craft unforgettable riffs while exploring unfamiliar sonic territory. The production is warm, heavy and organic, allowing every guitar tone and rhythmic pulse to breathe without sacrificing the crushing weight that doom metal demands.

This Expanded 2LP Vinyl Edition goes even further by adding three bonus tracks—“Oil”, “Nimis” and “Rock ‘N’ Roll”—making it the definitive version of one of Candlemass’ most underrated releases. For fans willing to step beyond the band’s classic sound, From the 13th Sun offers a fascinating glimpse into a legendary group refusing to stand still.
