Released in 1996, Life Is Peachy captures Korn at perhaps their most uncomfortable, abrasive and unpredictable. Arriving less than two years after their groundbreaking self-titled debut, the album didn’t attempt to polish the band’s sound for a growing audience. Instead, Korn pushed further into the darkness, delivering a raw, claustrophobic record that helped cement them as one of the defining heavy bands of the 1990s.

Once again working with producer Ross Robinson, Korn sound deliberately rough around the edges. James “Munky” Shaffer and Brian “Head” Welch turn their seven-string guitars into an arsenal of dissonant riffs and unsettling textures, while Fieldy’s percussive bass and David Silveria’s remarkably funky drumming give the music a rhythmic identity completely removed from traditional metal.

Jonathan Davis is the record’s emotional centre. His performance swings between vulnerability, rage, sarcasm and complete instability, giving Life Is Peachy the feeling that anything could happen from one track to the next. There’s less restraint here than on the albums that followed, and that’s precisely why the record remains so compelling.

The album also demonstrates how strange Korn could be when left to their own devices. Moments of crushing heaviness sit alongside hip-hop influences, bizarre vocal experiments and unexpected covers, yet somehow everything belongs within the same warped universe. What later became labelled “nu metal” was still being invented, and Life Is Peachycaptures that process while the edges were still dangerously sharp.

Coming between Korn and the massive commercial breakthrough of Follow the Leader, Life Is Peachy can sometimes be overshadowed by the albums surrounding it. It shouldn’t be. This is an essential Korn record: hostile, deeply personal and utterly distinctive, documenting a band discovering just how far they could push their newly created sound.
