Green Lung have spent the last several years becoming one of the most distinctive British heavy bands of their generation, and Necropolitan pushes their obsession with occult folklore into suitably macabre new territory. Their fourth album turns its attention towards London itself—its cemeteries, ghosts, gallows, forgotten railway lines and centuries of strange history—while retaining the huge riffs and vintage heavy-rock swagger that made the band impossible to ignore in the first place.
There has always been more going on with Green Lung than simply recreating early Black Sabbath. The Sabbath influence remains unmistakable, but Necropolitan draws equally heavily from the dramatic keyboards and guitar interplay of ’70s British hard rock. Deep Purple looms particularly large this time around, while the band’s characteristic combination of doom, psychedelic rock and English folk-horror imagery remains firmly intact. The result feels recognisably Green Lung without simply repeating Woodland Rites, Black Harvest or This Heathen Land.
Conceptually, London provides the album with a wonderfully grim playground. The title track’s Necropolitan Line refers to the remarkable railway once used to transport London’s dead from the city to Brookwood Cemetery, while elsewhere the record moves through magic, death, spiritualism and the capital’s darker folklore. Vocalist Tom Templar has described the album in the context of Green Lung’s continuing fascination with British folk traditions, and that sense of place gives the record an identity considerably stronger than generic occult-metal imagery.
The band haven’t forgotten the hooks, either. Necropolitan balances its heavy, ritualistic atmosphere with the sort of choruses and riffs that made Green Lung such a potent live proposition. It’s theatrical without becoming bloated, retro without feeling trapped in the past and unmistakably British in both subject matter and execution.
This standard Purple Vinyl edition is issued by Nuclear Blast in a gatefold sleeve, complete with a 12-page booklet and Necropolitan map. Nuclear Blast states that the purple pressing is limited to 4,300 copies worldwide, distinguishing it from the much smaller Purple Smoke, Purple/Black Corona and other exclusive variants.
