Greatest Hits Live 1990–1992 captures Alice In Chains during the brief, extraordinary period in which they went from a ferocious young Seattle band to one of the defining heavy acts of the decade. Rather than concentrating on a single concert, this collection draws from three live broadcasts recorded between 1990 and 1992, giving it the feel of a snapshot of the band’s rapid evolution.

At the centre of everything is Layne Staley. These recordings come from the period when his voice was operating with frightening power, capable of sounding vulnerable one moment and absolutely monstrous the next. Alongside him, Jerry Cantrell’s guitar and unmistakable harmonies provide the other half of the classic Alice In Chains sound, while Sean Kinney and the band’s rhythm section give the performances a weight that frequently pushes them closer to metal than the grunge label ever suggested.

The earliest material comes from the Sheraton La Reina in Los Angeles on 15 September 1990, captured for Westwood One. Another selection comes from The Palladium in Hollywood on 6 October 1991, while the latest recordings originate from the band’s hometown performance at Seattle Center on 20 December 1992, broadcast by KISW-FM. Together they trace Alice In Chains from the Facelift era through to the period when Dirt had established them internationally.

That chronology makes this more interesting than a straightforward hits package. You can hear the raw attack of the early band developing into the darker, heavier and more assured Alice In Chains of 1992. It’s a particularly potent reminder of how formidable the Staley-era band could be live.
