By the time Carcass reached Swansong in 1996, they had travelled an extraordinary distance from the pathological grindcore of Reek of Putrefaction. Their fifth album pushed the melodic instincts of Heartwork even further, stripping away much of the death-metal extremity in favour of massive riffs, rock ’n’ roll grooves and Jeff Walker’s unmistakably venomous vocals.
That stylistic shift divided listeners when the record first appeared, but time has been remarkably kind to Swansong. Bill Steer’s guitar work remains superb, while Carlo Regadas brings a different character to the band’s increasingly streamlined sound. Rather than attempting another Heartwork, Carcass created something leaner and more direct — a record sitting somewhere between death metal, heavy metal and filthy British hard rock.
The album also has an unusual place in Carcass history. It was recorded during 1995 with producer Colin Richardson, but contractual complications delayed its release until June 1996, by which point the band had effectively broken up. As a result, Swansong became both the end of Carcass’s original run and one of the most debated albums in their catalogue.
This Earache vinyl edition uses the label’s Full Dynamic Range mastering, designed to preserve greater dynamics rather than maximising loudness. The current standard black pressing carries catalogue number MOSH160FDR and barcode 5055006516098.
