Fear Factory: Genexus (Digipak CD)

Released in 2015, Genexus found Fear Factory sounding focused, aggressive and unmistakably themselves. Following The Industrialist, Burton C. Bell and Dino Cazares returned with an album that reconnects strongly with the mechanical precision, industrial atmosphere and man-versus-machine themes that made records such as Demanufacture and Obsoleteso influential.

The opening “Autonomous Combat System” wastes little time establishing the tone. Dino Cazares’ tightly controlled guitar riffs lock into machine-like rhythms while Burton C. Bell shifts between his trademark roar and soaring clean vocals. That contrast remains one of Fear Factory’s defining characteristics, and Genexus uses it particularly well.

“Anodized” and “Dielectric” continue the assault before the title track introduces one of the album’s strongest combinations of melody and heaviness. “Soul Hacker” is another standout, driven by a brutally simple central groove that sounds purpose-built for maximum impact.

One of the biggest differences from The Industrialist is the return of a live drummer. Mike Heller brings genuine physical weight to the material while maintaining the mechanical precision Fear Factory’s music demands. His playing alongside bassist Tony Campos gives the album a powerful rhythmic foundation beneath Cazares’ distinctive guitar attack.

The latter half remains remarkably strong. “Protomech,” “Church of Execution” and “Regenerate” deliver some of the record’s heaviest moments, while the atmospheric “Expiration Date” closes the standard album on a darker, more reflective note.

Produced by Dino Cazares and Burton C. Bell, with Rhys Fulber once again playing an important role in the band’s electronic sound, Genexus successfully combines the classic Fear Factory formula with a modern production. It’s precise without becoming sterile and melodic without sacrificing its aggression.

For fans of the band’s classic period, Genexus is one of the strongest Fear Factory albums of their later career and a reminder of just how distinctive their combination of industrial metal, death metal and science-fiction atmosphere remains.
