Before the arenas, private jets and tabloid mythology, Mötley Crüe were four hungry Los Angeles misfits making a record largely on their own terms. Too Fast For Love arrived independently through Leathür Records in 1981, capturing a version of the band that was rawer and considerably less polished than the global phenomenon that would follow. Forty-five years later, this enormous anniversary edition goes right back to that beginning.

The debut has always occupied a special place in the Crüe catalogue. Vince Neil, Mick Mars, Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee already possessed the ingredients that would define the band—glam, punk, metal and sleazy Sunset Strip rock—but the original recordings retain an urgency that disappeared as the budgets and venues became bigger. The independent Leathür pressing has consequently become one of the most coveted pieces of Mötley Crüe vinyl.

The centrepiece of this 45th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition is the opportunity to compare the two principal versions of the album. The original 1981 Leathür Records version is presented on vinyl and CD, while the familiar 1982 Elektra version receives its own LP. The Leathür sequence contains ten tracks, including “Stick To Your Guns,” which was dropped when the album was remixed and reconfigured for Elektra.

Things get considerably deeper from there. Two additional LPs contain Live At Perkins Palace 1982, capturing the young Crüe in their natural environment and including embryonic versions of material that would subsequently appear on Shout At The Devil. A fifth LP collects the March 1981 demos, including the previously unreleased “Nobody Knows What It’s Like To Be Lonely.”

And this really is a box set rather than five records shoved into a slipcase. BMG has also included a replica of the original “Stick To Your Guns”/”Toast Of The Town” 7-inch single, a replica 1981 demo cassette, a CD of the Leathür Records version, a replica poster and a lyric book. The cassette even recreates the original four-song demo programme on both sides.

For serious Mötley Crüe collectors, that’s what makes this edition so compelling. Instead of merely remastering the familiar nine-track album yet again, the set reconstructs the band’s earliest period and places the original independent album, Elektra revision, demos and live recordings together. It’s effectively an archaeological dig through the birth of Mötley Crüe—and a suitably excessive celebration of an album that started everything.
