Pist.On’s Sell.Out is one of those late-’90s heavy records that deserved considerably more attention than it received. Released in 1999, the Brooklyn band’s second full-length followed Number One and continued their peculiar collision of alternative metal, gothic atmosphere, heavy rock and the sort of downcast melodies that immediately distinguished them from the rapidly changing metal landscape around them.

There’s a definite New York darkness running through the album. Pist.On could produce thick, grinding guitar riffs, but they were never simply about brute force. Henry Font’s distinctive vocals give the material a melancholy, occasionally sardonic personality, while bassist Val Ium adds backing vocals alongside guitarist Burton Gans and drummer Jeff McManus. Library catalogue records for this edition confirm that four-piece line-up.

The band’s connection with Type O Negative inevitably hangs over their story, but Pist.On had developed an identity of their own by Sell.Out. Rather than chasing the emerging nu-metal explosion, the record leans into gloomy alternative metal and heavy rock, with strong melodies underneath the distortion. There’s an almost grunge-like weariness in places, making it an interesting artefact from that awkward period when ’90s alternative metal was beginning to fracture into several very different directions.

Sell.Out also has the feel of a record made by a band that should have broken considerably bigger. Pist.On had already toured alongside major acts, but the second album failed to generate the commercial momentum required to push them into the next tier. That history has made the CD something of an overlooked curiosity for collectors of ’90s alternative and gothic metal.
