Saxon: Live In Germany 1991 (Gold Vinyl)

$80.99

Saxon’s Live In Germany 1991 arrives for Record Store Day 2026 on 18 April 2026 as a limited 2LP on gold coloured vinyl. It is a Music On Vinyl release, pressed on 180 gram audiophile vinyl, housed in a sleeve with a special finish, and limited to 1,500 individually numbered copies. Rough Trade lists the catalogue number as MOVLP4025, while Record Store Day lists the barcode as 8719262042650.

What makes this one worth paying attention to is the era. Saxon in 1991 were not a nostalgia act circling old glories. They were still a seriously hard-hitting live band, and this set catches them in that lean, muscular phase where the classic songs still had bite and the newer material could stand shoulder to shoulder with the old warhorses. The release is described as being sourced from a German performance in early 1991, and Proper Music notes it was mastered from the original reel-to-reel tapes, which gives this issue a bit more weight than a lazy archive dump.

As a review, this looks like a proper Saxon live document rather than just a collector curio. The setlist is stacked with exactly what you want: “Heavy Metal Thunder,” “Motorcycle Man,” “Crusader,” “Strong Arm Of The Law,” “Princess Of The Night,” “Wheels Of Steel,” “Denim And Leather,” and “747 (Strangers In The Night).” That is a band playing to its strengths with no wasted motion. Saxon have always been one of those groups whose catalogue really comes alive on stage, because the songs are built to hit in a room full of people rather than sit politely in a studio mix. This one sounds like it preserves that directness.

There is also a nice collector angle here. Rough Trade notes that the title has been long out of print, with revised/new artwork, and says it was previously only available as a picture disc in this expanded vinyl context. That makes the RSD 2026 edition feel like a genuine event piece for Saxon fans rather than just another colour swap. For Rue Morgue Records purposes, this is the kind of RSD title that earns it. Classic band, strong year, killer songs, good format, and enough scarcity to keep collectors interested.
