Slayer’s Hell Awaits is getting the full deluxe treatment for its 40th anniversary with a 3LP box set due on 15 May 2026via Metal Blade Records. The headline item is the restored original album on fire splatter vinyl, backed by a previously unreleased Live From Bochum 1985 set across two 180g black vinyl LPs. The box also includes a 60-page 12-inch booklet, slipmat, two posters, a replica newsletter, merch sheet, two flyers, and a replica Bochum ticket.

As a record, Hell Awaits is where Slayer stopped sounding like a band chasing extremity and started sounding like the future of extreme metal itself. Show No Mercy had the speed and attitude, but Hell Awaits is darker, uglier, more patient, and far more sinister. The riffs feel like they are dragging chains behind them, the atmosphere is diseased, and the whole thing has that horrible, ritualistic tension that made so many later death and black metal bands possible. This is not thrash as party music. It is thrash as threat.

That is why Hell Awaits still hits so hard. The title track alone is a masterpiece of buildup and menace, turning repetition into dread and making the payoff feel genuinely unclean. “Kill Again,” “At Dawn They Sleep,” and “Praise Of Death”all push that same feeling in different directions, where speed is only part of the weapon and atmosphere does the rest. Slayer were still raw here, but this album uses that rawness perfectly. It sounds feral, but it also sounds focused. You can hear the band learning how to make evil feel cinematic without losing the violence.

The 40th anniversary edition looks like a proper one too, not some lazy repackaging job. Metal Blade says the 1985 album has been restored from the original tapes, while the box adds 18 previously unreleased live tracks from Bochum in 1985. That live material matters because this was peak young Slayer, still hungry, still reckless, and still playing like they were trying to break the room. So this set works on two levels: the studio album remains one of the most important records in heavy music, and the bonus live material gives it real archival value.

For Rue Morgue Records purposes, this is essential. Hell Awaits is not just a classic Slayer album. It is one of the records that helped redraw the boundaries of what metal could sound like. The fire splatter LP gives it collector appeal, but the real draw is the music itself. This thing still sounds possessed.
