There are albums that were successful in their day, and there are albums whose reputations simply kept growing. Angel Witch’s self-titled 1980 debut firmly belongs in the latter camp. It never achieved the commercial numbers of Iron Maiden, Saxon or Def Leppard, but within underground heavy metal its influence has become enormous.
Led by guitarist and vocalist Kevin Heybourne, Angel Witch occupied the darker end of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. The riffs have all the speed and energy associated with the movement, but there’s a sinister atmosphere running through the album that separated them from many of their contemporaries. Occult imagery, melodic guitar work and genuinely memorable songwriting give the record a character that still sounds distinctive more than four decades later.
The title track became the anthem, but the album goes considerably deeper. Atlantis and White Witch establish its mysterious atmosphere early, while the second half becomes increasingly ominous. Gorgon, Angel of Death and the instrumental Devil’s Tower demonstrate why Angel Witch became such an important influence on the darker strains of heavy metal that emerged during the following decade.

The original trio of Heybourne, bassist Kevin Riddles and drummer Dave Hogg also sounds wonderfully raw. There’s none of the enormous production that would dominate metal later in the ’80s. Instead, Angel Witch has the immediacy of three musicians caught at precisely the point where ’70s hard rock was mutating into something faster, heavier and more aggressive.
This 2026 Music On Vinyl edition presents the album on silver coloured vinyl and is individually numbered. Crucially, MOVLPS3189 is limited to just 750 copies.
For NWOBHM collectors, this isn’t simply an interesting period record. Angel Witch is one of the genre’s cornerstone albums, and a 750-copy numbered silver pressing is an appropriately metallic edition of a British heavy-metal classic.
