Thirty years after the original release, You Wanted the Best, You Got the Best!! returns to celebrate one of the biggest moments in KISS history: the 1996 reunion of Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss. After years of speculation, the four original members appeared together again in makeup and launched the enormously successful Alive/Worldwide reunion era.

Originally released in 1996 to coincide with that reunion, You Wanted the Best, You Got the Best!! wasn’t simply another greatest-hits collection. Instead, it reached back into the band’s legendary Alive! and Alive II recordings, assembling performances that captured KISS during the explosive 1970s period when their reputation as one of rock’s greatest live attractions was being forged.

That makes the record an interesting companion to the original live albums. Rather than attempting to tell the entire KISS story, it concentrates on the original quartet and the raw live energy that made those four musicians such a phenomenon. The inclusion of the lengthy “KISS Tells All” interview with Jay Leno also anchors the collection firmly to the excitement surrounding the 1996 reunion.

For the album’s 30th anniversary in 2026, the standard edition finally receives something collectors have been waiting for: its first standalone vinyl release. Previously available on vinyl as part of the massive KISSTERIA box set, the album is now being issued separately as a 180-gram black vinyl 2LP.

The presentation has also been upgraded. This anniversary edition comes in the album’s first-ever gatefold jacket, expanded with additional photography. It’s a particularly fitting treatment for an album intrinsically connected to the return of the original KISS line-up and the extraordinary wave of excitement that surrounded the band in 1996.
