Record Store Day 2025 Exclusive Edition
Format: 2LP, Translucent Blue & Red Vinyl
Recorded: March 1991, Sala Zeleste, Barcelona
Label: Sire / Rhino
Limited to: 6,000 copies
Originally released in 1991, Loco Live captures the Ramones at the tail end of their storied career, still delivering ferocious, high-octane punk rock with their trademark no-frills style. This 2025 RSD exclusive revives that energy with a new remaster, housed in a stunning blue-and-red vinyl gatefold set that’s equal parts collector’s dream and live punk document.
SOUND QUALITY
The remaster on this edition is crisp and punchy, bringing out the band’s rawness without compromising fidelity. Unlike the original ‘91 release — which had two different versions (Sire’s with overdubs and Chrysalis’ UK mix) — this remaster leans closer to the Sire mix, but with more clarity in CJ Ramone’s bass and Marky’s drums. Joey’s vocals are commanding, if slightly distant at times — but that only adds to the gritty, live aesthetic.
The crowd noise is well-balanced: audible, energetic, but not intrusive. When “Blitzkrieg Bop” drops early in the set, the energy is unmistakable. The sonic chaos is controlled, which is rare for early-90s live punk recordings.
PERFORMANCE
Even in ’91, the Ramones tore through songs at breakneck speed.
-
Joey Ramone sounds fierce and unwavering, particularly on “I Believe in Miracles” and “Bonzo Goes to Bitburg.”
-
Johnny Ramone’s guitar remains a buzzsaw of power chords, ripping with machine-like precision.
-
CJ Ramone, who replaced Dee Dee by this era, handles bass and backup vocals with youthful fire, especially on “Wart Hog” and “Somebody Put Something In My Drink.”
-
Marky Ramone drums like a freight train—tight and relentless.
This lineup might not be the original four, but it’s a brutal, professional, road-worn unit delivering 32 songs in just over an hour.
PACKAGING & VINYL
Visually, this RSD edition nails it:
-
Gatefold packaging includes new liner notes, live photos, and replica tour flyer art.
-
Each LP is pressed on 140g colored vinyl — one red, one blue — evoking the raw, rebellious color palette of punk fanzines.
-
Pressing is flat, quiet, and dynamic, a clear upgrade over earlier pressings that sometimes suffered from muddiness.
HIGHLIGHTS
-
“The KKK Took My Baby Away” – Electric, pissed-off, and timeless.
-
“Cretin Hop” – Flawlessly executed chaos.
-
“Pet Sematary” – A horror-pop gem delivered with surprising finesse.
-
“Somebody Put Something in My Drink” – CJ’s punk snarl steals the spotlight.
VERDICT
This RSD 2025 release is the definitive vinyl version of Loco Live — a must-own for fans, collectors, and anyone who wants to experience the Ramones in full post-apocalyptic meltdown mode. The remastering is tasteful, the performance is feral, and the packaging screams punk perfection. While some may still prefer the raw charm of It’s Alive, Loco Liveshows that the Ramones never stopped being dangerous, even in their later years.
